First, it really SUCKS to be an imperial fighter pilot and thats...
...secondly the reason why you have to add as much dakka as you can to make it cool again

You've read Dan Abnett's "Double Eagle"? It has very little to do with Navy, or start-fighters, more about the only Imperial Guard "fighter" regiment (which uses Lightning and Thunderbolt)and life of Imperial pilots.

They didn't suck so much if you ask me.

I didn´t read the book but in fact this is not a planetary fighter but an interceptor (eg for torps) an in the most space battles I read about fighters suck - they are the first to die and the last to retreat

Well, it IS true that the only space-fighters less advanced than Imperium's are Orks (and they are basically rockets rigged with guns and painted red for speed).

And you should read it. One of the few Sabbat Crusade books I read twice.
